They are presented in the form of discs with a diametre of 41mm, compact and dehydrated. Its use is very simple though if we do not follow the key steps, we may have germination problems by a water excess; therefore, we should pay attention to the instructions.
We start by upsetting all the Jiffys we need in the container, we add water of good quality till covering all the discs, we wait for about 5 minutes and we will observe how they are absorbing the water, hydrating and taking a cylindrical form. Now comes the most important part and the most common mistake; the waterlogged disc, such as it is, will not let the roots breathe and will , rot any seed we put in it, even the most expensive ones. We have to squeeze it strongly until it leaves the last drop of water. Naturally we will have to restore it its original shape with our fingers before planting.
Now the disc is correctly wet and we will be able to make any seed germinate as long as it has a minimum of germination power, even the cheapest ones if we do it properly. Otherwise, the waterlogged Jiffy weights a lot, it is almost black and shines due to the great amount of water that it retains and when we take it, it will drip because we have not followed these simple steps.
Obviously, in the days that follow the Jiffys could get dry. No problem, we take a spray and moisten again those that need watering. We always have to work by default, never in excess in this phase. Many inexperienced growers water again the Jiffys with a watering can, nothing could be more wrong since if they have got dry and the seeds have not germinated yet, we will swamp the growing medium again. So go slowly and spray until getting the right humidity.
The seeds are planted at a depth of 2-5mm inside the Jiffy; cuttings have to remain stiff once placed, so we will have to press the peat with our fingers around the stem in order that it keeps properly stuck.
